Setting the Course for SustainMed 2.0 – Project Partners Deepen Their Collaboration
Work in the SustainMed 2.0 project is continuing with full momentum. At the first joint working meeting, the focus was not only on getting to know the project partners in person, but above all on fine-tuning the content and objectives for the months ahead.

This cooperation is complemented by the associated clinical partners BG Klinikum Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin, BG Klinikum Duisburg, and University Hospital Tübingen—forming a strong combination of clinical expertise, innovative capacity, and strategic project management.
At BG Klinik Tübingen, initial working groups were formed and key topics were explored in depth through interactive workshops. Jointly defined objectives, clearly assigned roles, and well-structured work packages now form the foundation for the multicentre rollout. The diversity of perspectives—from clinical operations and research to project and innovation management—creates a constructive dynamic that is clearly accelerating the development of practical, real-world solutions.

SustainMed 2.0 aims to identify, test, and make widely available practical and sustainably effective approaches to greater sustainability in healthcare. At its core is a structured exchange of knowledge between hospitals, manufacturers, research institutions, and healthcare practice. This experiential and expert knowledge is systematically translated into data models, methods, and digital frameworks. The result is transferable translational knowledge that combines qualitative and quantitative data, insights, and implementation-relevant information.
On this basis, all stakeholders along the healthcare value chain can act more quickly, safely, and resource-efficiently—with lower implementation risks and a measurably greater impact on environmentally and economically sustainable healthcare management. The benefits are clear: even in operating theatres, SustainMed has already demonstrated significant recycling and CO₂ reduction potential, for example through targeted waste separation in standard surgical procedures.
A deeper insight is provided by the SustainMed Market Compass study (in german).
We are looking forward to the official kickoff on 4 December at BG Klinik Tübingen together with the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy Management and the project sponsor Projektträger Karlsruhe (PTKA). With a clear roadmap and strong motivation, we are entering the next phase of the project.
