Sustainable Transformation and Digital Connectivity in Healthcare
The aim of SustainMed 2.0 is to enable the transfer of practical, application-oriented solutions that promote greater sustainability in hospitals and companies, while also establishing and expanding network structures. Best-practice examples are generated using digital tools at the participating hospitals, both in Baden-Württemberg and across Germany.
By consistently connecting all relevant stakeholders—from hospitals and companies to political decision-makers—sustainable measures are to be integrated into everyday healthcare delivery, thereby making a measurable contribution to resource conservation and the reduction of emissions in the healthcare sector. This is particularly important given that an average German hospital currently generates around eight tonnes of waste per day and is responsible for approximately 5% of greenhouse gas emissions.
Over a project duration of 29 months (18 September 2025 – 17 February 2028), SustainMed 2.0 is funded with approximately €680,000, within a total project volume of around €890,000.
SustainMed 2.0 builds on the predecessor project SustainMed.
Outlook
To this end, sustainmed.eu—a digital communication and collaboration platform—is being developed to disseminate content, systematically build networks, and foster exchange through regular in-person and online events. This approach promotes structured dialogue, identifies new potential, and enables its systematic transfer into practice.
In addition, the sustainmed.connect platform will be implemented at BG Klinik Tübingen and, in a first step of the multicentre enrolment, expanded to two further hospitals in order to create data-driven use cases. Complementing this, a multidimensional data base will be established through target-group-specific survey panels.
Role of BioRegio STERN within the Project
Leveraging its strong regional connections within the healthcare industry, BioRegio STERN Management GmbH will help ensure that the results developed at BG Klinik Tübingen, the University Hospital Tübingen, and additional partner hospitals within the BG Klinik network are made accessible to other hospitals as well.
By connecting hospitals, care facilities, manufacturers, NGOs, and political decision-makers, an open dialogue is created that disseminates existing solutions, generates new impulses, and develops concrete pathways for implementing greater sustainability in healthcare. With its extensive network of companies, BioRegio STERN Management GmbH is ideally positioned to support this process.
