North Carolina Life Sciences Trade Mission Visits Stuttgart

On May 9, 2025, we had the pleasure of welcoming the delegation of the North Carolina Life Sciences Trade Mission to Stuttgart as a cooperation partner. The event, held at the Evangelisches Bildungszentrum Hospitalhof Stuttgart, provided an excellent platform for international exchange, targeted matchmaking, and the development of new cooperation approaches in the fields of biotechnology, medical technology, and pharmaceutical research.

The meeting was organized by AHP International, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC), BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg GmbH, and BioRegio STERN Management GmbH.

Focus on Networking

Following the official welcome by representatives from AHP, EDPNC, BIOPRO, and BioRegio STERN, participating companies from both regions introduced themselves through short pitches. This allowed for a quick overview of competencies and potential areas of collaboration. Subsequent B2B meetings facilitated targeted connections, discussion of project ideas, and the identification of potential synergies.

The event concluded with a joint networking buffet, which further promoted informal exchange.

Representatives from Business and Research

Participants from Germany included the following companies and research institutions:

CeGaT GmbH, erler GmbH automation, Fraunhofer IPA, QBiC, highQu GmbH, PEPperPRINT GmbH, novineon CRO GmbH, PHABIOC GmbH, Synovo GmbH, Varimol, NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute

Representing the U.S. side were companies such as:

Adámas Nanotechnologies, Aesara, Codetta Bio, SmaBio Laboratories, Swabbot Solutions LLC

Successful Launch for Future Collaborations

All participants considered the event a highly valuable opportunity for international—and also national—networking. Particularly noteworthy was the open and purposeful dialogue, which revealed numerous starting points for future partnerships.

Key Insights:

  • North Carolina is positioning itself as a growing life sciences hub with a strong willingness to collaborate.
  • The Baden-Württemberg region impresses with strong research, high innovative capacity, and close ties between science and industry.
  • Many participants expressed concrete interest in further exchange formats.

"I studied classical chemistry, completed additional internships at the Institute of Biochemistry in Würzburg and was thus able to complete my diploma and PhD thesis in this field of chemistry. Based on my experiences that I could gather as a researcher at immatics biotechnologies GmbH in Germany and abroad, I can easily identify suitable partners from companies or institutions in an international context in order to initiate potential collaborations. Since 2011, I have been involved in various EU projects at BioRegio STERN Management GmbH and am now responsible as a project manager for the Interreg NWE project Boost4Health, launched in April 2016, to support and promote the economic development of regional and transnational SMEs. Through my numerous contacts with other European networks, I am also the initiator and contact for further diverse cooperation in neighboring European countries."

I completed my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biotechnology at the University of Hohenheim. In my thesis work at the Institute of Bioprocess Engineering, I focused on microbial biosurfactant production. My research included investigating the biosurfactant production in shake flasks using lignocellulose, a sustainable carbon source, as well as exploring molecular process control strategies in a 20L bioreactor.
After that, I worked for three years as a Process Engineer in process development for plasmid production at CureVac in Tübingen. During this time, I actively contributed to the development of microbial cell banks and the clone selection process for a production clone.
Since February 2025, I have been working as a Project Manager at BioRegio STERN Management GmbH, supporting the team in the implementation of EU-funded projects. I am particularly excited to accompany and shape the development of innovative and forward-thinking technologies, especially in an international context.
