Towards the Smart Biofactory: Insilico Biotechnology AG and Three Space Lab join forces

(Stuttgart) Insilico Biotechnology AG and Three Space Lab LLC, provider of collaborative virtual reality solutions, announce their collaboration to implement a 3D virtual Digital Twin as a key building block for a modular smart biofactory.

The virtualization of biopharmaceutical production facilities opens up unprecedented possibilities for next generation biofactory design, optimization, and operation which will result in much more efficient and robust production of biotherapeutics. Digital Twins of physical assets such as bioreactors or purification devices are the building blocks for the virtual biofactory. To facilitate human-human and human-machine interactions in such smart factories, Insilico and Three Space Lab collaborate to develop a 3D virtual Digital Twin as a visual representation of the cell culture bioproduction process.

Dr. Scott W. Greenwald, CEO and President of Three Space Lab LLC says that "We are excited to revolutionize biomanufacturing by combining our virtual reality technology with Insilico's Digital Twins. We believe there is an immense opportunity for biopharmaceutical companies to implement our jointly developed visual Digital Twins to design improved bioproduction processes in virtual reality. This means less effort, reduced risk, and increased process understanding." Klaus Mauch, CEO of Insilico Biotechnology AG, adds: "Virtual reality has much more to offer than we see in the entertainment sector. Human interactions with devices and data in the smart biofactory require a multidimensional yet highly intuitive interface. Virtual reality can provide such an interface. In the future we will see teams of scientists from all around the world collaborate or learn together in virtual facilities.”

After the initial phase of the collaboration which will focus on the cell culture process, such virtual Digital Twins will serve as a blueprint for other unit operations of the smart biofactory. The first phase of the collaboration will run until December 2021 and will be based in Insilico’s Stuttgart, Germany, location and Three Space Lab’s premises in Boston, MA, USA.
