MEDI4Future Kicks Off in Breda: Building a Circular Future for MedTech
On April 23–24, 2026, the historic city of Breda in the Netherlands became the starting point of a new European collaboration with ambitious goals. Hosted at the Leonardo Hotel Breda and organised by the Brabant Development Agency (BOM), the MEDI4Future Kick-off Meeting brought together a diverse consortium of partners united by a common vision: advancing circularity and sustainability in the MedTech sector.
A Strong Consortium with a Shared Vision
The project launched with an impressive network of 11 partners from six European countries, reflecting both geographic diversity and a broad spectrum of expertise. Representatives from innovation agencies, research institutions, and cluster organisations gathered to lay the foundation for the months and years ahead.
Participating organisations included:
- BOM (NL, Lead Partner)
- ATLANPOLE (FR)
- Atlantic Technological University (IE)
- AxisBIC (IE)
- Bioindustry Park Silvano Fumero (IT)
- BioLAGO (DE)
- BioRegio STERN Management (DE)
- InnovationQuarter (NL)
- Medicen Paris Region (FR)
- Oost NL (NL)
- University of Liège (BE)
This mix of stakeholders reflects the interdisciplinary nature of MEDI4Future—bridging innovation, policy, and industry to address one of the most pressing challenges in healthcare technology.
From Introductions to Alignment: Setting the Course
The kick-off meeting was designed not only as a formal project start but also as an opportunity to build trust and mutual understanding. Early sessions focused on getting to know each other, with each partner presenting their motivations and expectations. These exchanges revealed a shared commitment: to support SMEs in navigating the transition towards more sustainable and circular business models in MedTech.
As discussions progressed, the consortium worked intensively to refine project goals, align timelines, and define collaboration structures. Particular attention was given to clarifying roles and responsibilities for 2026, ensuring that each partner’s expertise would be effectively leveraged.
Laying the Groundwork: From Analysis to Action
A central pillar of MEDI4Future is understanding the current landscape. The consortium agreed on a structured approach to map the status quo of circularity practices across regions. This includes desk research, stakeholder interviews, and an analysis of policy and market conditions. Identifying needs and gaps at this stage is critical to developing targeted and impactful solutions.
Another key focus was the development of the M4F Toolbox, a practical resource designed to support SMEs in implementing circular strategies. Discussions addressed fundamental questions:
- What content should the toolbox include?
- How can SMEs be effectively engaged?
- What tangible outputs will deliver the highest value?
The exchange of previous Interreg project experiences, including initiatives such as STEP4NAMs and Codex4SMEs, provided valuable insights into best practices and potential pitfalls.
From Concept to Implementation: Pilots and Training
Beyond strategic planning, the meeting also marked the beginning of concrete implementation pathways. Partners discussed guidelines and selection criteria for pilot projects, which will serve as real-world testing grounds for circular solutions.
Training programmes emerged as another cornerstone of the project. The consortium agreed to prioritise capacity-building for SMEs, ensuring that tools and knowledge are not only available but also accessible and applicable. Interactive formats and a strong focus on usability will be key to success, while training for business support organisations and regional development agencies will follow at a later stage.
Looking Ahead: A Shared Commitment to Impact
At its core, MEDI4Future aims to integrate circular economy principles into the MedTech sector through a joint strategy, practical guidelines, pilot actions, and targeted capacity-building. The kick-off meeting in Breda demonstrated that the consortium is not only aligned in its objectives but also highly motivated to translate vision into action.
As participants departed Breda, the sense of momentum was tangible. What began as a two-day meeting has set in motion a collaborative journey—one that seeks to reshape how innovation and sustainability intersect in MedTech across Europe.
The next steps are clear: deepen analysis, develop tools, engage stakeholders, and move steadily towards implementation. With a strong partnership and a shared purpose, MEDI4Future is well positioned to make a lasting contribution to a more sustainable healthcare ecosystem.
