Bernd Engler re-elected as Tübingen University President

Senate and University Board confirm incumbent

Professor Bernd Engler was re-elected unopposed as President of the University of Tübingen on Monday. His new term of office starts on 1 October 2020. Engler has been President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Tübingen since 2006; this will be his third term.

Engler guided the University to Excellence status in the 2012 round of the German government’s Excellence Initiative and is leading the effort to extend that status in the next round of Excellence competition.

After thanking the Senate and the Board for their vote of confidence, Professor Engler outlined the University’s current positive situation: a budget rise from 230 million to more than 600 million over ten years; student numbers hovering at all-time highs; more staff, and outstanding new research clusters in the pipeline. However, he warned against complacency, saying that success is based on consistent effort.

Bernd Engler (born 1954) studied German, English, and Philosophy at the University of Freiburg. Following his doctorate, he completed his habilitation there in 1989. After working at the University of Sussex (UK), Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill, USA) and the University of Massachusetts (Amherst, USA), he was appointed a Professor of American Studies in Tübingen in 1992. 2006 wurde er erstmals zum Rektor gewählt.
