Tropenklinik Paul-Lechler-Krankenhaus

Man is the medicine of man

The hospital Tropenklinik Paul-Lechler-Krankenhaus is a certified acute care clinic for geriatrics and internal medicine as well as a focus on palliative medicine. The hospital is also one of the largest centers for tropical and travel medicine in Germany. Founded in 1916 by the Stuttgart entrepreneur Dr. med. h.c. Paul Lechler as a convalescent home for patients with tropical diseases and located in the hills of Tübingen, the hospital expanded into a geriatric-internistic clinic after the Second World War. In Addition, from the 1970s onwards, a further focus of treatment in palliative medicine was established.
The hospital's sole shareholder is Difäm –  Deutsches Institut für Ärztliche Mission e. V. ("German Institute for Medical Mission") in Tübingen.
In 2017, a new 90-bed hospital with generously designed rooms was built, offering excellent modern technical and diagnostic equipment. Flat hierarchies, interdisciplinary cooperation, an appreciative team culture and professional development are key features of our renowned and innovative clinic. In our Interdisciplinary Dementia Unit (IDA) featuring daytime companions, patients with a secondary diagnosis of dementia receive adequate care. As specialists in geriatrics, we are closely cooperating with the " Geriatric Traumatology Centre" of the Berufsgenossenschaftliche Klinik Tübingen (BG).
Being a pioneer in palliative medical care, the hospital established an independent palliative care unit with 8 beds as early as 2014. The outpatient palliative care service "Tübinger Projekt" of Paul-Lechler Hospital has been caring for seriously ill people in the district of Tübingen since 1991.
The cross-sectoral services of palliative and hospice care on our premises at Lechlerhöhe, tailored to the needs of our patients, were completed with the opening of the Tübingen Hospice in 2021 in the immediate vicinity of the clinic.
As a cooperation partner of the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW), we are an official training center for the degree course in applied nursing science.
