Landessaatzuchtanstalt (LSA)

University institution of research and development in the field of plant breeding

Tasks and Aims: Initiated by C. Fruwirth, the State Plant Breeding Institute (Landessaatzuchtanstalt, LSA) was founded in 1905 as a university institution of research and development in the field of plant breeding. The tasks to be fulfilled by the LSA are guided by socioeconomic requirements for an ecological crop production.

Main objectives are:

Durable genetic resistance to diseases and pests Improved biological and technological quality High nutrient uptake and utilization efficiency Tolerance to abiotic stress To meet these objectives, the LSA works mainly in the following areas: Developing and optimizing breeding strategies Creating improved breeding material or varieties Analyzing the genetic potential of new crops Maintaining, evaluating, and using plant genetic resources
