PhD Student (m/f/d) Cardiovascular Disease

The Dr. Margarete Fischer-Bosch Institute of Clinical Pharmacology, Stuttgart (Director Prof. Dr. M. Schwab) is operated by the Robert Bosch Foundation. Since its foundation in 1973, the institute has emerged as Germany's largest and most renowned scientific research unit in the field of clinical pharmacology. Main research activities concentrate on the influence of genetic and non-genetic factors on variability of drug efficacy and their contributions to disease development.

Currently, we are looking for a

PhD Student (m/f/d)

Prof. Dr. M. Torzewski's research focuses on the pathogenesis of both atherosclerosis and aortic valve stenosis. Both diseases are characterized by an active remodeling process accompanied by tissue calcification. A number of different cell and molecular biology techniques are used to identify the clinical and physiological relevance of potential triggers of cardiovascular calcification.

Job Description

  • Application of a broad spectrum of basic molecular and cell biology techniques, including immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence,  immunoblotting, and real-time PCR
  • Cell culture: Isolation and culture of valve interstitial cells (VICs)/myofibroblasts
  • Functional testing of compounds (e.g., lipoprotein modifications, pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines) in in vitro cell models
  • Ex vivo tissue analysis of stenotic aortic valves (histochemical and immunohistochemical analysis)
  • Analysis of experimental datasets (e.g., immunohistochemistry, gene expression) using biostatistics and bioinformatics

Qualifications

  • Master degree (M.Sc.) in biology, biochemistry, molecular medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related discipline
  • Experience and solid background in molecular biology and cell culture technology
  • Preliminary practical experience in working with cell culture would be beneficial
  • Interest in studying the biology of vascular calcification
  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills

Additional Information

  • The opportunity to work in an interactive team providing support and mentoring
  • State-of-the-art equipment and technologies for a wide range of different applications (e.g. transcriptomics, metabolomics) and expert knowledge within the different core facilities at the institute
  • Participation in the PhD program
  • The opportunity to communicate scientific results at conferences and to participate in workshops
  • Company health management and fitness offers
  • Employee discounts at a variety of companies
