info@genmedics.comwww.genmedics.comDR. PETRY genmedics GmbH focuses on research into the Staphylococcus organism. The biotechnology firm, which has bases in Reutlingen and Tübingen, is not only seeking to combat the disease pathogen but also use it as a carrier agent for various active agents.

The pathogen Staphylococcus epidermidis is capable of forming a biofilm on a range of surfaces. Thanks to its high levels of resistance to a wide range of antibiotics, pathogenic Staphylococci are becoming a major hazard in the field of medicine in the context of biofilm-related, foreign-body infections. It is for this area of activity that DR. PETRY genmedics offers an evaluation of materials for biofilm formation. As a result, new medical materials such as foreign-body implants can be checked for their biofilm formation properties.

In addition to working with pathogenic Staphylococci, the firm also focuses on the expression of therapeutically-effective proteins in the food-grade bacterium S. carnosus.

info@immatics.comwww.immatics.comimmatics is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the development of innova¬tive cancer immunotherapeutics.
immatics' proprietary technology for the identification of tumor-associated pep¬tides (TUMAPs) enables the development of novel anti-cancer vaccines for multiple cancer indications. immatics is currently developing two multi-TUMAP products in clinical phase II studies – IMA901 for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and IMA910 for the treatment of colorectal carcinoma (CRC). Further product candi¬dates are currently in pre-clinical de¬velopment.

With its unique proprietary XPRESIDENT™ discovery platform, immatics is constantly identifying very large numbers of naturally-presented tumor-associated peptides (TUMAPs) directly from primary tumor tissue. Since 2004 alone, the company has identified more than 50,000 TUMAP sequences and has secured the IP rights for those with high potential for use in cancer therapy.
immatics identifies TUMAPs which occur as natural ligands of HLA class I and II-receptors. These TUMAPs can activate cyto¬toxic T cells and T helper cells, key players of the cellular immune response, which have the ability to eradicate cancer cells once they are primed effectively.
TUMAPs are short peptides which are excellent drug candidates. They can be syn¬thesized and characterized by established, robust and fully scalable chemistry.

info@explosys.dewww.explosys.deThe three Explosys scientists work on the basis that even seemingly simple problems in public health are caused by complex, interacting factors and thus require customised solutions. Using mathematical models and computer simulations, they aim to create innovative and flexible solutions for precisely such problems. Of course, such models are also intended to advance fundamental research into epidemiological modelling. Realistically-simulated infection outbreaks are intended to train physicians and people in positions of responsibility in how to bring potential epidemics under control through fast and efficient intervention.

“InterSim” is a computer model that can authentically simulate the progress of a spreading infection. It enables recommendations to be derived for decision-makers, for example, those in public health roles. InterSim has since received multiple awards, including the “Special Prize for Open Source Software” in October 2004 from the Business Initiative Baden-Württemberg: connected (bwcon). A simulator, based on InterSim, was developed following a commission from the BGMS (German Federal Ministry of Health and Social Security) and is currently being used by the Robert Koch Institute to develop efficient interventional strategies for epidemics.

The "Influenza-Pandemic-Planning-Simulator" InfluSim enables the prediction of the temporal course of an influenza pandemic. The software can be downloaded from http://www.uni-tuebingen.de/modeling/Mod_Pub_Software_de.html.

contact@m-phasys.comwww.m-phasys.comM-fold Biotech was founded in 1999 as m-phasys by Dr. Hans Kiefer, Dr. Wolfgang Vogt, Marc Lohrmann and i.con. innovation GmbH.

Membrane proteins are the most commercially-interesting target proteins for medications and represent M-fold Biotech GmbH’s core area of expertise yet they are also the most difficult to work with. The key to the firm’s success was the use of the patented M-FOLD technology, which was used to manufacture membrane protein antigens. Using two very different methods (immunisation and “phage display” selection), the firm succeeded in manufacturing antibodies with the required binding properties and biological activity and selectivity.

In addition to structural analysis, m-phasys has recently established a new area of business, namely the manufacture of antibodies that act against membrane proteins and can themselves act as medications.

M-fold Biotech's customers include major pharmaceutical companies who commission the structural analyses in order to develop medications.

These include: Analysis, whose techniques are deployed either independently or in concert with others; Cell and Tissue Culture, complete with its associated testing options and Services for Clinical Trials (applications, monitoring, coordination etc.).

The company’s own research focuses primarily on micronutrients and their enrichment for regenerating biological systems. BioTeSys uses nanoparticles as a new and smart means of transport for encapsulating active ingredients and addressing them so that they exert their effect directly on the target organ. This reduces the quantity of active ingredient in the body and avoids putting strain on the organism as a whole.

Commissioned by Pascoe Pharmazeutische Präparate GmbH, BioTeSys developed a kit for determining micronutrients. This kit currently enables the presence of vitamin C, the E vitamins, ß-carotene and lycopene to be detected in swabs taken from oral mucosal tissue.

www.retina-implant.deRetina Implant AG is a medical technology start-up company founded in 2003 and built on the results of a research project that has been ongoing since 1996 and which involves numerous German university hospitals and research institutions, including the University Eye Hospital in Tübingen, the NMI Natural and Medical Institute in Reutlingen, the Institute of Microelectronics in Stuttgart, die University Eye Hospital and Ophthalmology Outpatients’ Department in Regensburg and the Institute of Physical Electronics at the University of Stuttgart. The company was converted into a corporation (AG=Aktiengesellschaft) in July 2007.

Retina Implant’s scientists primarily focus on patients with retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary condition that can lead to complete blindness in just a few years. Retina Implant is developing retinal implants that are intended to restore vision after blindness has occurred. The development work focuses on an active, sub-retinal silicon chip with tiny photo-sensors which control an electronic switch enabling the nerve cells of the retina to be supplied with more or less electrical stimulation, depending on the brightness. These send impulses via the optic nerve to the brain which can then generate a picture from these signals. Only recently, 2 blind patients were implanted the sub-retinal chip. Since undergoing surgery, both patients are able to make out shapes.

In April 2006, as part of a capital increase, Mediplan GmbH took around a 25% share in Retina Implant AG by investing Euro 7.5 million in an initial tranche. Mediplan has also committed to investing a further Euro 7.5 million in the company once CE accreditation has been gained, which is required before a medical product can be marketed in Europe. The newly acquired funding will enable Retina Implant to finance clinical trials and the cost of approving the chip for market until it achieves break-even.

Retina Implant AG is hoping to launch a fully functional chip in about two years' time. An important step towards reaching this goal is the recent ISO certification of the company.

info@anoxymer.infowww.anoxymer.comAnoxymer was founded at the end of 2000 and was headquartered at the Kompetenzzentrum für nachwachsende Rohstoffe (Competence Centre for Sustainable Raw Materials) in Straubing (Bavaria) until the end of 2005.

Based in the Lifescience Center Esslingen since the start of 2006, the company specialises in research and development into new and innovative health ingredients from herbs, vegetables and fruits and uses these to produce standardised, highly water-soluble plant extracts with proven health benefits. Anoxymer markets these extracts as ingredients for foods (functional foods) and cosmetics (cosmeceuticals), and in the form of capsules/tablets as dietary supplements.

Screening for bioactive substances that have a positive effect on health has already led to the discovery of new substance classes of oligosaccharides of plant origin exhibiting different types of physiological activity (Anoxymins®). In addition to their antioxidant character (radical scavenging activity), the health-giving properties of individual secondary plant substances lie in their immune-strengthening antiangiogenic and/or anti-inflammatory activity. In addition to the isolation of bioactive substances accompanying the biotest, and their biological and chemical standardisation, the company's proprietary and interlinked in-vitro and in-vivo test systems (CAM assays) not only enable Anoxymer to demonstrate the effectiveness of the substances, but also to identify potential toxicities and side-effects in good time.

Health-giving extracts (Planox®) from various plants for anti-ageing and joint health have already been developed. The company has worked with cooperation partners from the foodstuffs and cosmetics industries to adapt these to their specific technological requirements for use in various foodstuffs or cosmetic products. Anoxymer also has further bioactive natural substances for digestion, diabetes and skincare in its product pipeline.

Anoxymer enables its customers to explore new pricing and design opportunities through added-value products. The scientifically proven data relating to the functional and health properties of the standardised plant extracts and enriched foodstuffs is corroborated by test studies so that, in the future, there will be more concrete evidence on the health benefits, which can also be used for advertising purposes.

The company, which was established in 2008 by two bioinformaticians and an ecologist, designs software solutions specifically aimed at clients in the life sciences, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.

The software systems developed by Nexxor do not just focus on data and documents, but are also able to represent the meaning and context of database content in a flexible and meaningful way, thus making the knowledge of individual members of a cooperative project accessible to all. In addition, the software systems enable independent data sources to be linked.

The technology can for example be used for the administration of a broad range of project data generated by medical, pharmacological, agricultural or ecological studies, but also for substance collections or drug information systems, as well as a broad range of biological, biochemical or physiological relationships. In many areas that use rigidly structured databases for the management of information, the new technology will greatly benefit users thanks to its high degree of flexibility and the large number of access paths that confer meanings.

silvia.roecker@zmbp.uni-tuebingen.dewww.zmbp.uni-tuebingen.deEver since its foundation in May 1999 as an interfaculty and interdisciplinary research priority within the Faculties of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Tübingen, the Centre for Plant Molecular Biology has occupied a leading international position in the research and education of young scientists.

This is evident from the large number of publications in leading scientific journals, comprehensive third-party funding, strong involvement in national and international research associations and the excellent evaluation by an independent scientific advisory board. In addition, over the last eight years, more than 20 ZMBP scientists have been appointed professors at German and international institutions. This is also clear evidence of the stimulating research environment at the ZMBP.

Flat hierarchies, global budget, independent research and technological support from the ZMBP’s central service institutions provide junior researchers and group leaders optimal conditions to work and research in 16 independent groups of researchers. This modern structure, continuous technological development and quality control by the scientific advisory board ensure the international competitiveness and scientific excellence of the ZMBP. The latest recognition of the Centre’s capabilities was the German Council of Science and Humanities’ (Wissenschaftsrat) decision to grant the ZMBP a new research building. Further information can be found at http://www.zmbp.uni-tuebingen.de.
Together with the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology and the University of Hohenheim, the ZMBP has initiated the “RegioPlantScience” research consortium with the goal of more effectively coordinating research and education in the field of plant sciences in the region.

www.mf.mpg.deThe Max Planck Institute for Metals Research was founded in 1921 as one of the first Kaiser Wilhelm Institutes and has been a leading research institution in this field ever since. Since its relocation to Stuttgart in the 1930s, the Institute has been closely connected with the University of Stuttgart.

Nowadays, the Institute’s main research areas are the basic functions and applications of nano-biosystems. Its close connections with the traditional disciplines of physics, chemistry and the life sciences enable the Institute to work with exciting, basic issues in an interdisciplinary way and at the border of the aforementioned disciplines.

Up to 400 scientists, including around 150 foreign scientists, focus on research, with the support of technicians and other staff members. The scientists are spread around eight departments, each one managed by a director and scientific member of the Max Planck Society (Prof. Dr. Siegfried Dietrich, Prof. Dr. Manfred Rühle, Prof. Dr. Ir. Eric Mittemeijer, Prof. Dr. Gisela Schütz, Prof. Dr. Joachim Spatz –three departments do not currently have a director in place).

Five junior research groups have recently been established at the MPI-MF. The junior research groups run for a period of five years and are led by excellent junior researchers (Dr. Dagmar Goll, Dr. Frauke Gräter, Dr. Raquel Martin, Dr. Ralf Richter, Dr. Sylvie Roke). In addition, Prof. Dr. Clemens Becher, Head of the Institute of Physics II at the University of Stuttgart, was appointed Max Planck Fellow in 2007.

The Institute has a world-class reputation in the analysis of materials, including methods of X-ray diffraction and absorption, neutron scattering, electron and X-ray microscopy, surface analytics as well as calorimetric, magnetic and mechanic measurement techniques. This broad range of methods enables the Stuttgart researchers to gain detailed insights into complex material phenomena.

“From model systems to implementation of model systems up to materials with real microstructures and application potential” – this is the development chain at the MPI-MF. Although the chain is mainly basic research-based, this type of research nevertheless often enables the Institute to cross over to application-oriented research. The Institute makes major contributions to the development of materials for practical applications for use in energy, transport, information technology and the life sciences. This basis for technical innovations is based on active and successful collaborations with industrial companies.
