Improved quality of life for patients with chronic wounds

Since its foundation three years ago, AgenoLab GmbH & Co. KG in Stuttgart has become a leading service provider in the area of life sciences and biotechnology. The company’s cell culture technology unit focuses on the preparation of cells that can largely eliminate the need for animal testing. In the area of regenerative medicine, AgenoLab GmbH concentrates on the growth of skin cells as transplants for patients suffering from burns and chronic wounds. The development of further cell therapeutics is another area of interest. The company has recently launched an innovative full-thickness skin transplant for healing wounds using the patient’s own cells. Within the framework of the Users’ Centre for Regenerative Medicine in the Neckar-Alb and Stuttgart health region (REGiNA), which is currently in the process of being established, AgenoLab is being supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with just short of Euro 1 million for two projects, one of which is the development of the above-mentioned full-thickness skin transplant.

The High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and Life Science Fonds Esslingen are jointly investing a total of 700,000 EUR in Amedrix GmbH, which was founded in January 2009. The Esslingen-based company develops innovative, acellular medical products based on animal collagen for wound regeneration and the reconstruction of degenerated soft tissue, for example. The new investment means that necessary steps can be taken to gain approval for first medical products and to set up the company’s own production operations.

German Federal Minister Annette Schavan announced BioRegio STERN Management GmbH a winner of the “Gesundheitsregionen der Zukunft” (“Health Regions of the Future”) competition on 27 May in Berlin. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will support the planned Users’ Centre for Regenerative Medicine in the Neckar-Alb and Stuttgart health region (REGiNA) for the next four years, covering around half of the total budget of almost EUR 17 million.

When Alfred Nordheim studied biology in Berlin in the 1970s, Germany lagged far behind in comparison with the rest of the world when it came to genetics. Maybe one of the reasons the young Hessian student from Philippsthal decided nevertheless on molecular biology was that he had already spent 2 semesters studying aerospace engineering. “I had been concentrating on the basics of natural sciences such as physics and chemistry so I began approaching biology from an analytical point of view,” explains Prof. Nordheim who has been president of the German Genetics Society since 2005. In July of this year, Nordheim was elected as president of the International Genetics Federation during the International Congress of Genetics in Berlin. In Prof. Nordheim’s view, the fact that the congress took place in Germany means that the country has caught up in the field of genetics and is now eye to eye with leading international competitors.

Tübingen-based biotech company CureVac GmbH has been given the go-ahead to manufacture a trial drug for use as a cancer vaccine.
The Tübingen regional government office has approved production of the RNA-based drug RNActive, whose effectiveness is being tested in clinical studies. The vaccine is designed to help the immune system specifically detect and combat degenerative cells.

Synovo GmbH, based in Tübingen, performs early phase analysis of newly developed substances – mainly on behalf of clients in the pharmaceuticals industry – to determine whether they have sufficient potential to be used as anti-inflammatory medicines. Synovo uses a series of analysis methods developed in-house to significantly reduce the time it takes a new substance to reach the clinical trial stage and to optimize know-how about composition and quality. Only very few highly specialised companies are able to offer services of this nature. As a result, Synovo has been able to increase its workforce from 3 to 32 within only two years. The internationally active and listed biopharmaceutical company Bone Medical Ltd. from Perth, Australia (ASX: BNE; ADR: BMEDY) has now chosen to enter into a collaboration with Synovo GmbH.
