Bioenergy – waking the sleeping biofuel tiger
Europe’s most state-of-the-art biogas plant is being built in the STERN BioRegion. The Hohenheim facility is the centrepiece of Baden-Württemberg’s bioenergy research platform and is home to large-scale joint biomass fermentation, production, cleaning and utilisation projects.
The region’s local authorities are also embracing the concept of biogenic fuel. Take the example of Leonberg, where the biogas recycling operation in a special fuel cell called a HotModule is a world first. Further innovative projects are planned with the support of industry, business backers such as the WRS (Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart GmbH) and BioRegio STERN Management GmbH.
These examples show that the region has exactly the right mix of scientific and industrial expertise plus broad support from the public. Companies and research institutes are working to optimise biofuel production and utilisation. This involves various sectors, such as mechanical engineering, biotechnology, the energy sector, agricultural engineering and agriculture.
